![]() THE NAVAL CLUB |
The Club, Patron Her Majesty the Queen, is situated at 38 Hill Street between Park Lane and Berkeley Square. The Club is a classic, listed, 18th century town house built as part of an exclusive Mayfair development. One of the first occupants was the Earl of Chatham, brother of William Pitt the Younger. The Raphael family owned the building from the 19th Century, and carried out much refurbishment, until 1946 when the freehold was acquired by the Royal Naval Volunteer Reserve Officers' Association. They moved into the building from Pall Mall. The Club was renamed the Naval Club eleven years after the RNVR was subsumed into the Royal Naval Reserve in 1958. In 1954 the building was designated a War Memorial to the RNVR. In 1987 the building was listed Grade 2. A charity, the Wave Heritage trust, was established in 1996 to maintain the building in perpetuity.
The Club has 27 single and double rooms with the usual modern facilities at prices lower than London hotels. The Club can be contacted on 0207 493 7672 mentioning The Nelson Society. Bookings are available now for members and their families staying with them. Members may entertain guests in the public rooms.
The Affiliation represents a significant addition to The Nelson Society membership privileges and I hope members and their families will make good use of it. It is intended that an annual lecture will be held at the Club in February to commemorate the Battle of St Vincent.
