Can you help?
The President of Chestfield Rotary Club in Kent has told us that on Friday October 22nd 2010 they will be holding a “black tie” charity dinner as a Trafalgar Night celebration. They will be holding the event in Commissioners House at HM Dockyard, Chatham. They have a few things organised for the evening but are keen to find an after dinner speaker (to speak for circa 15 minutes about Lord Nelson, Trafalgar etc including a few lighter elements).

New Membership Secretary Wanted
The Nelson Society is looking for a new Membership Secretary
This is a crucial role in the running of the Society, and we need someone who can take it on as soon as possible – ideally in the next month or two.
The role involves the following:
- Keeping a membership database updated on computer
- Producing address labels quarterly for the mailing of The Nelson Dispatch
- Receiving annual subscriptions from members, recording and banking, working closely with the Treasurer
- Dealing with enquiries from prospective members and sending publicity information
- Attending committee meetings in London 4 Saturdays per year.
You don’t need any special experience, although you will need to use a computer, and will need to be able to keep on top of the incoming correspondence on a regular basis. Out of pocket expenses such as necessary travel and stationery, postage etc. are covered by the Society.
All we need you to donate is some of your time and enthusiasm, to help the Society to function. Are you interested – or do you know someone who might be?
We are very grateful for the contribution of the present incumbent Des Houghton, and very sad that he is unable to continue in the role, but the new Membership Secretary can be certain that he or she will be taking over an efficient operation, and will be helped and supported to achieve a smooth handover. Go on – give it a go! Even if you are just thinking about it, please contact the Secretary Sue Morris, or the Chairman Keith Wood, for more information.
The Nile Clumps Visit August 1st 2010
The Nile Clumps Visit August 1st 2010
NOW POSTPONED TILL Monday August 1st 2011
The Nelson Society is for a second time to visit The Nile Clumps near Amesbury, Wiltshire on Sunday August 1st 2010 with Amesbury Rotary and The National Trust. Our thanks to them and to Neil and Hugh Morrison of Countess Farm for inviting us for a return visit. This year we look forward to seeing the trees sponsored by the Nelson Society and individual members whilst there.
We will meet at the barn on Countess Farm at 10.00 am and as with the last visit there will be a tractor drawn trailer for those who need it or would just enjoy the ride as it is quite a walk to The Clumps. This event is suitable for families.
After we will travel the short distance to The Salisbury/Stonehenge Holiday Inn for lunch. We have opted for their three course carvery in the Solstice Grill, which we feel is ideal as it is difficult to give our exact arrival time there. We had an excellent lunch there last year. The cost of the outing and lunch is £20.00 per adult – I have details for children. Please book by July 1st 2010
For those who arrive early there is a Little Chef nearby where morning coffee can be bought. We have arranged an overnight package rate for members who wish to have a weekend away. The rate for Nelson Society members is £61.00 per room per night and includes breakfast. There are some family rooms available at £61.00. They are holding rooms at this price until June 30th 2010. Members must book their own rooms with The SalisburyStonehengeHoliday Inn. For more information go to www.hisalisburystonehenge.co.uk or phone Helen Burley on 0845 241 4420
The Nile Clumps are a very unique place to visit especially on the Battle Day. For more information see our website at www.nelson-society.com or contact me Genevieve St George.
Bookings should be sent with a cheque to The Nelson Society, Flat 13 John Tucker, 40 Mellish St, London E14 8NS. My phone is 0207 515 8173 and my email is stgisland@hotmail.com

Nelson Society Walk in London
Nelson Society Walk in London
October 21st 2009
We will meet at Blackwall Station ( named after for Blackwall shipyard here famous for building East Indiamen and Naval vessels – the real saying is SHIPSHAPE AND BLACKWALL ) on the DLR at 10.00am at Ground level not on a platform. From there we shall walk through the former Poplar Dock now a marina to Coldharbour to see Nelson House, a lovely Georgian house, where Lord Nelson is said to have stayed during a fleet refit and has been known as Nelson House ever since. It is a private house still so we can only view it from the street. It is amazing that Nelson House and much of Coldharbour survived the heavy bombing during WWII. From Nelson House we will walk down Coldharbour to The Gun Pub – made famous as it is said that Lady Emma Hamilton came there to meet with Lord Nelson. We will stop here for morning coffee. The Gun is right on the riverside has been tastefully restored after a recent fire, still a favourite watering hole in the area.
From The Gun we will have a leisurely walk along the River Thames to the bottom of The Isle of Dogs passing the former building of Cubitt brickworks, across the river we will see the last working dry dock on the Thames, Trinity Almshouses and other local sights. From Island Gardens Park we will have a wonderful view of Greenwich Hospital at Greenwich. We will then make a lunch stop at The Lord Nelson nearby. The current landlord has since 2005 held a Trafalgar Night Dinner. He is very keen to have The Nelson Society lunch at his pub which serves traditional pub food.
After lunch we will walk the short distance to Island Gardens station on the DLR for the one stop ride to Greenwich. There is a foot tunnel under the Thames if any wish to walk the tunnel and meet us in Greensich. At Greenwich we will visit the remains of Greenwich Hospital Cemetery in the front garden of former The Devonport House (now an hotel) before finishing in The Nelson Gallery of The National Maritime Museum. The museum has recently acquired Lord Nelson’s vest which is now on display. There is plenty to see and do in Greenwich.
Though it is a flat walk please wear sensible shoes, there is generally a breeze off the river so it can be cooler. Bring your camera as some lovely views.
Blackwall Station is easily reached from Bank on the DLR – take any train for Beckton or Woolwich Arsenal. If travelling on the Jubilee line alight at Canning Town and catch DLR back two stations to Blackwall Station. From Greenwich one can catch the DLR back to Bank station or one can go by overground rail to London Bridge. London Bridge to Greenwich was the first suburban train service in the World.
Please book by October14th 2009 please. My phone No is 0207 515 8173 my email is stgisland@hotmail.com Genevieve St George
