First, apologies for a long delay in offering a reply to Stuarts's questions - I've been away from the excellent Nelson Society site for some years. To answer the questions regarding Nelson's statue at the Admiralty:

There is a statue of Lord Nelson in the hallway of the old Admiralty Office (Ripley Building, Whitehall). It is the life-size plaster maquette (final working model, not a cast) of the much larger statue on Nelson's Column in Trafalgar Square and was given to the Admiralty by the sculptor.

Nelson is shown looking down and to his left, and his gaze would encompass the large commemorative tablet above the hall fireplace. However, the tablet does not commemorate Nelson's captains but the staff of the Admiralty killed in WWI; there is a strange story connected to the names on the tablet, but you will have to wait for my forthcoming social history of the Admiralty in London!

For the names of Nelson's 'Band of Brothers', any good biography - such as Tom Pocock's - will give these, and I also recommend 'Trafalgar Captains'.

Best

Thank you for your imformative site. I am looking for the source of a verse engraved on the case of a watch given to Dr Hayes by Nelson at the battle of Trafalgar. The verse starts:
Olovely menial of light,
That tells the hours by day and night.
Thank you for any help.

Firstly may I say what an excellent site you have & thank you for the chance to ask for help on Lord Nelson.
My question comes in two parts.
1. I have seen several photos of the foyer of the Ripley Building (the Admiralty circa 1900) In these there is a statue of Nelson that is a replica of the one atop Nelson's Column & said to be a first cast of this famous statue, is this true?
2. The stuate is placed in such a way that he appears to be looking toward the fireplace above which is an honour roll supposedly of those captains (men he called his band of brohters) who served under him. Is this correct and if so is there a list of those captains?
I would be greatful for any help you may be able to give in this matter.
