There will be a meeting of The Midlands Group of The Nelson Society on
Saturday April 4th 2009 in The Goodison (Education) Room at Soho House, Soho Avenue, off Soho Road, Handsworth, Birmingham, B18 5LB.
The meeting will be from 11.00 a.m. until 4.00 p.m.
Our guest speaker will be Mr. David Shannon. The subject of his talk will be 'The Nelson Centenary of 1905. David is well known to Nelson Society members and is the author of several books about Nelson and his times. A long serving committee member of The Nelson Society, Mr Shannon was at one time the Society's Vice Chairman before leaving to live in Australia. He also edited The Nelson Dispatch for some years. Old habits die hard, because he is involved with The Nelson Society of Australia and runs a maritime publishing business. He is currently on a lengthy visit to UK so I decided to book him for a talk before his return to the warmer climes of Australia later on in April.
We are also having some background music (sea shanties and songs about Nelson) and some Nelson related videos featuring the late Dr. Colin White as a tribute to him.
There is free parking at Soho House. Light refreshments are available in Soho House tea room (we will have a brief break around lunchtime) Soho House (the former home of Matthew Boulton) is also open on that day for you to look around the house if you wish. Entrance to the Soho House itself is free.
