THE Nelson Society has been invited to visit The Nile Clumps near Amesbury, Wiltshire on Saturday August 1st  2009 by Colin Heggie and Amesbury Rotary Members, Neil and Hugh Morrison of Countess Farm and The National Trust. The Nile Clumps are beech trees each depicting a ship at The Battle of the Nile and were planted by Baron Douglas of Amesbury in the early 1800’s, said at the behest of Lady Hamilton and Capt Hardy. Elizabeth Baker and I represented Dr Keith Wood on April 23rd 2009 at the unveiling of a new Plaque there commemorating and explaining the Nile Clumps. We found it a wonderful experience and delighted The Nelson Society are invited to return on The Battle Day itself.

We will meet at Countess Farm at 10.00 am. Cars can be left there to walk to the Clumps on the farm. It is possible to drive closer for those who cannot walk easily by car or landrover to the field by the recently unveiled plaque. From the boundary fence we will have good views of the Clumps that are on the adjoining private land.

It is then proposed that we travel the short distance to The Antrobus Arms, Amesbury for an informal lunch together (see attached menu) with members of Andover Rotary and others who are involved in the available on July 31st. The Antrobus Arms has accommodation on July 31st. There is also a Travelodge and a Little Chef  by the  Countess Roundabout. There are plenty of B& B’s in the area. The Little Chef is just IDEAL for a comfort stop and coffee (opens at 7AM) before meeting at Countess Farm by 10.00am please. Please wear suitable clothes and walking shoes.

Can you please let me know by July 20th 2009 so that we can let our hosts know numbers and book the Antrobus Arms. Members may like to make a weekend of it so I enclose useful details : Antrobus Arms 01980 623163; Travelodge 0871 984 6218

We look forward to celebrating of The Battle of The Nile in a very unique way.
