Topping & Company Booksellers of Ely are delighted to announce an event with John Sugden to celebrate his landmark biography of Admiral Lord Nelson. ‘Nelson – The Sword of Albion’ is the long-awaited follow-up to ‘Nelson – A Dream of Glory’ – surely no Nelson enthusiast will want to miss this opportunity to hear and discuss with the leading biographer of England’s greatest hero.

John Sugden will be speaking on Tuesday 25th September at St Peter’s Church in Ely, right on the doorstep of Norfolk, the county of Nelson’s birth.

Gold : Power and Allure

4500 years of gold treasure from across Great Britain

  To celebrate the Queen’s Diamond Jubilee the Goldsmith’s Company have  mounted their largest ever exhibition at Goldsmiths Hall.

Of special interest to Nelson Society members will be the Snuff Box presented to Admiral Lord Nelson by General de Vins in 1795 to celebrate the Battle of Genoa that is on loan for this exhibition. It is exquisite made of gold and enamel. The lid has a painting of Genoa set within the anchor. It is very unusual and probably not seen by many Nelson Society members. It is in the Exhibit about The Lloyds Patriotic fund. Other items in it include the Trafalgar sword presented to Vice Admiral Dundas, Vice Admiral Collingwood’s Trafalgar medal and other items.

The exhibition has a large range of items : Jewellery including the Irish Lunala circa 2000-1500 BC; Livery Company items; Clothing including Gold Court Jerkins from the Coronation of King George IV who had the most expensive ever Coronation. There is Royal Regalia ;Ecclesiastic Gold items including an Ampulla from 1633; Gold coins of the Realm; Sporting Gold Cups and the Lonsdale Belt. There is simply something for everyone.

This Free exhibition runs until July 28^th 2012, 10.00 am to 5pm Monday to Saturday

at Goldsmiths’ Hall, Foster Lane, The City of London, EC2V 6BN. It is only a 5 minute walk from St Paul’s Tube Station.
